Cardiology Introduction written by the development group:
The publication of clinical pathways in cardiology for
General Practitioners is timely. Scotland has an ageing population with chronic
disease, as well as a better educated younger population who expect a more
definitive answer to common symptom complaints. The ready availability of
accurate non invasive cardiological diagnostic tests
rightly places the initial management of cardiovascular disease in primary
care. The pathways are provided as a guide to aid the General Practitioner in
the face of an increasing number of diagnostic tests and therapeutic options.
Certain patients will require to be referred for specialist
care; it is hoped the clinical pathways in cardiology will provide a guide for
whom it is appropriate to refer to secondary care and what investigations and
tests are helpful in the patients’ work up. Equally importantly, the development group hopes that
these pathways will provide the General Practitioner with the confidence to
manage their patients in Primary Care.
Referral assumes obvious reversible causes are corrected in
Primary Care.
